On Sunday, February 24, less than one week before the automatic, across-the-board cuts known as the sequester are set to take effect on March 1, the White House released to the press factsheets detailing specific impacts of the spending reductions for each state in a number of program categories. Regarding education, the sheets describe impacts on teachers and schools, work-study jobs, Head Start, and job search assistance programs. For safety and security, the reports highlight the impacts on military readiness and law enforcement. Each fact sheet also identifies state-specific estimates of the sequester’s impact on child care, vaccines for children, public health, nutrition assistance for seniors, and the STOP Violence Against Women Program. The reports also outline the sequester’s nationwide impacts on education programs, small business loan guarantees, food inspections, medical research, and mental health. The timing of the release of these reports coincides with the winter meeting of the National Governors Association, which includes a meeting today at the White House between the nation’s governors and President Obama.
