White House Launches “College Scorecard”

Today, the Obama Administration launched the U.S. Department of Education’s “College Scorecard,” an interactive tool to provide students and families with more information about the costs and benefits of all degree-granting higher education institutions – both public and private – across the country. President Obama announced the new resource during his State of the Union address yesterday. The College Scorecard provides metrics for key indicators about the cost and value of institutions in an effort to assist students and their families make informed decisions about where to enroll for higher education. Specifically, each Scorecard provides data on costs, graduation rate, loan default rate, average amount borrowed and employment for an institution. These data will be updated on a periodic basis, and the Department has indicated it will publish information on earnings potential of graduates in the coming year. This project is part of the President’s ongoing efforts to increase the accountability of colleges and institutions for cost, value and quality.
