This Week on the Hill

This week, the Senate is expected to take up and modify the continuing resolution recently passed by the House (HR 933) to continue funding the federal government for the remainder of fiscal 2013. The House is expected to consider two bills on Tuesday, including HR 749, which would eliminate the requirement that financial institutions send out annual privacy notices to customers if their privacy policy has not changed. On Wednesday, the House is expected to consider the Preserving Work Requirements for Welfare Programs Act (HR 890), would reauthorize the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program through December 31, 2013 and also nullify states’ ability to waive work requirements under the TANF program in certain circumstances. Later in the week, the House may also take up a bill to reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act (HR 803). In addition, both the House and Senate Budget Committees are scheduled to mark up their fiscal 2014 budget resolutions this week.

Also, on Wednesday, March 13 at 2:30pm, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a hearing titled “The Costs and Impacts of Crisis Budgeting,” which will include testimony from NASBO Executive Director Scott Pattison on how federal budgetary uncertainty affects state and local governments.
