On February 14, the U.S. Department of Education awarded $3 million in Project School Emergency Response to Violence (SERV) grants to Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and New York City to provide education-related services in communities most impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Project SERV was established in 2001 to assist school districts and higher education institutions recover from a violent or traumatic event that has interrupted the learning environment. The states awarded SERV funds are directed to identify schools or school districts hardest hit by the storm that can use the funds to re-establish safe learning environments for students.
