Late last week, a bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation that would extend agricultural and livestock disaster programs. Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), along with co-sponsors Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Roy Blunt (R-MO), and Claire McCaskill (D-MO), unveiled a bill (S 141) that would extend the Livestock Indemnity Program, Livestock Forage Program and Emergency Livestock Assistance Program, among other programs. These programs were not included in the Farm Bill extension enacted as part of the fiscal cliff compromise. According to the bill’s sponsor, the legislation would backfill the programs for 2012 and would extend them through 2013 to coincide with the anticipated passage of a comprehensive Farm Bill by this Congress.
