President Obama today unveiled a proposal that many are calling the most ambitious effort to reform federal gun control policy in decades. The President recommends legislative action to require criminal background checks for all gun purchases, reinstate the ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004, limit high-capacity ammunition magazines, and establish new gun trafficking laws. In addition, the President announced 23 actions he would take under executive authority. These actions include addressing “unnecessary legal barriers…that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system,” improving incentives for states to share background check information, and implementing several mental health and school safety measures. The President’s recommendations announced today resulted from the work performed over the past month by an interagency task force on gun violence led by Vice President Joe Biden. According to reports, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) is expected to introduce a gun control bill backed by the President next week.
