The U.S. Census Bureau released its full report last week on manufactured goods for January. The report showed a decrease of $9.6 billion (2.0 percent) in new orders for manufactured goods, with the total number of new manufacturing orders for the month at $472.9 billion. Analysts attribute the decline in new orders to weakened demand for transportation and defense equipment. When transportation is excluded from the calculation, new orders increased by 1.3 percent. The data also showed modest decreases for the month of January in shipments (-0.2 percent) and unfilled orders (-0.2 percent), along with a small increase in inventories (+0.5 percent).
