National Drug Control Policy Releases Northern Border Counternarcotics Strategy

On January 20, the Office of National Drug Control Policy released its Northern Border Counternarcotics Strategy outlining ways to reduce the flow of illegal drugs between the United States and Canada.  The strategy is guided by five objectives, including enhanced intelligence and information sharing capabilities along the northern border between federal, state, local and tribal law-enforcement authorities.  It also calls for an increase in the amount of seized illegal narcotics and drug proceeds along the border through increased security at and between the ports of entry.  The strategy is the first required under the Northern Border Counternarcotics Act of 2010.  The law requires the Office of National Drug Control Policy to release an updated strategy every two years.
