Marketplace Fairness Legislation Reintroduced in Congress

On February 14, identical measures to permit states to collect taxes on remote sales were reintroduced in both the House and Senate, after similar bills failed to achieve passage during the previous Congress. The bipartisan legislation is backed by 18 senators and 35 House members, as well as numerous trade associations, businesses, labor groups, and state and local government organizations including the National Governors Association (NGA). The measure would allow states to enforce state and local sales and use tax laws for remote sellers, except for those making less than $1 million a year. In exchange, the bill would require states to simplify and streamline their tax administration and collection systems.
