The House of Representatives passed the Preserving the Welfare Work Requirement and TANF Extension Act (HR 890), by a vote of 246-181 on March 13. The legislation extends the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program’s authorization until December 31, 2013, and prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from implementing its proposal to allow states to seek a waiver from work participation standards. TANF’s authorization expires on March 27, 2013. The House did not include a provision to reauthorize TANF in its version of the continuing resolution (CR) for the remainder of fiscal 2013. The Senate version of the CR does include an extension through September 30, 2013.
