Later today, the House is scheduled to consider a bill (HR 890) to extend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program through December 31, 2013. The program is currently set to expire with the continuing resolution (CR) on March 27. In addition to extending the program, the measure would also nullify states’ ability to waive work requirements, after the Obama Administration announced last year that it would provide waivers to states in certain circumstances to offer states more flexibility. The CR passed by the House last week does not include an extension of TANF, but the Senate’s amended version of the CR would extend TANF through September 2013, without language regarding the work requirement.
