Federal Transit Administration Releases Funds for Transit Emergency Relief

On February 4, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced the availability of $2 billion through its new Emergency Relief Program to help protect, repair and replace public transit equipment and facilities that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013, which President Obama signed into law on January 29, provides $10.9 billion for the program. FTA will cover 90 percent of the costs for most projects and funds will be awarded on a rolling basis through grants to states, local governments, transit agencies and other organizations that own or operate transit systems damaged by the storm. Applications for these initial funds are due thirty days after publication in the Federal Register. The remaining $8.9 billion will be made available once FTA publishes interim guidelines.
