Last week, the Department of Transportation (DOT) published a request for comments on its draft Research, Development and Technology (RD&T) Strategic Plan for FY 2013–FY 2018. The five-year plan will guide DOT’s research, development and technology activities as required by MAP-21, the highway and surface transportation reauthorization. The plan will focus on DOT’s strategic goals: safety, state of good repair, economic competitiveness, livable communities and environmental sustainability—along with the RD&T critical issues identified in MAP–21: promoting safety, reducing congestion and improving mobility, preserving the environment and existing transportation systems, improving the durability and extending the life of transportation infrastructure; and improving goods movement. DOT is seeking comments from stakeholders to ensure wise investment of resources to achieve measurable improvements in U.S. transportation. Comments are due April 26, 2013.
