Private and public construction spending levels were down slightly in January. According to a report released by the U.S. Census Bureau, total construction spending was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $883.3 billion, 2.1 percent below the December estimate. Spending on public construction in January was at an estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of $269.0 billion, 1.0 percent below the December estimate. Spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate 2.6 percent below the December figure, due to a decline in nonresidential construction.
