On Thursday, March 4, the House passed an amended version of the Senate-passed jobs package (HR 2847) by a vote of 217-201. The $17.6 billion package is centered on payroll tax relief for businesses that hire new workers, with a cost of $13 billion over ten years. The bill also makes permanent the Build America Bonds program to fund state and local infrastructure projects and extends the Highway Trust Fund through December 31, 2010. Before passing the legislation the House approved amendments that would direct some transportation funding to minority-owned businesses and address deficit concerns. The bill now returns to the Senate for consideration.
